Chapter Five – Alex

Nine necromancers. That was the total they had agreeing to assist. Still not enough. Still a logistical nightmare to gather them all in place. Amity had been back at work for two weeks now, much to the delight of the other staff members. Happy to see an old friend return, and bittersweet because other friends would never return, no matter how much they wanted it.

The dates with Hannah worked out better than he expected. Due to her painfully low experience with romance and relationships in general, he took it slow, making sure she was comfortable with the pace and could learn to navigate the ins and outs of dating in her own time. The horny part of him that wanted to rush things was kept well in check.

“Hey, Alex, Alex!” He turned around to see one of his colleagues, Winston, puffing and leaning on his knees. “I’ve got word to pass to you, since you don’t have your pager on you…”

“Yeah, I broke it, sorry. What’s up?”

“Ruthar says he confirmed two more necromancers from the Czech Republic, so that’s eleven in total. He’s still looking for more, but he says that we’re above the criteria now.”

Yes, Alex thought. Finally! “I’d be more comfortable with a few more, but we better get to searching for the current location of the King of Dragons.”

“One more thing. He says also that they’ve pinpointed a rough region for where the King of Dragons is now. It’s in America. And… there is reason to believe that the next target is the dragon clans in Yellowstone Park.”

Alex’s blood ran cold. “You’re kidding. That’s the super volcano location. Hell—there’s a clan that’s built protection around the caldera, specifically to keep an eye on it.”

“Yep. The Yellowflames. We’ve alerted them already, and they are on guard, but we don’t know who exactly is wielding the artifact. If it’s a dragon shifter or something else. Either way, that’s where we’re taking everyone once they come here and we get more intel on the movements. Last… there’s talk of using one of the vault artifacts to divine the location.”

Made sense. One of the vault artifacts was a Divining Stone. The problem was that people who tended to use it had their lives drastically shortened from a normal lifespan. So naturally, that meant it didn’t get a whole lot of use. Most likely Ruthar was hunting around for someone terminally ill and close to their death anyway to use it. Safest and most humane way to utilize it.

Winston scurried away after he’d presented his news, leaving Alex to contemplate more. They’d divine the user’s location and send the army of necromancers in his direction. They’d get a strike team to secure the artifact, and then the necromancers to exorcise the souls once and for all. There was a little push-back from some of the board members in that they didn’t want such an ancient, powerful artifact neutralized, in case one day it might be used for good. Thankfully, Ruthar had won out in favor of getting rid of it once and for all.
